No, Orban was not a dictator

And the dangers of buzzwords

Until recently, the Prime Minister of Hungary was Viktor Orban, who had been in that position since 2010. As prime minister, he was the head of the Fidez party, which is a conservative Christian party that Orban wanted Hungary to somewhat become. He infamously built a border wall to prevent migrants from coming in, being against liberal agendas from the rest of the EU,  not supporting Ukraine, and other various activities. Thus, this made him very unpopular among the EU, and the Western elites in general, and criticized him in various ways, as far-right, a Russia puppet, and others. However, lots of people further call Orban a dictator, citing his claims that he is creating an “illiberal democracy” in Hungary, his long time as prime minister, and other actions of his. This is coming at a time where people often use buzzwords like “Dictator”, “Nazi”, “Hitler”, and others at people they don’t like. However, if Orban was just voted out of office, and he officially conceded, doesn’t that make him not a dictator? So, is Orban a dictator?

However, we first need to be clear what a dictator is, because it is not exactly an easy term to define, despite it seeming so initially. Is it someone who tells everyone else what to do, which is the literal definition of a dictator, derived from the Latin word Dictat? I don’t think your parents are the worst dictators in human history, even if you might sometimes think that way. Is it someone who reigns beyond the term limits, or longer than one is supposed to? You may not like him, but Franklin D Roosevelt was no dictator. Is it someone who suppresses all the people? That wound forget all benevolent dictators, which, although definitely not close to perfect, still try to somewhat improve the country, like Ataturk, the first president of Turkey, despite oppressing the Kurds, Armenians, and Greeks, modernized Turkey, and made it more democratic than before. Or the dictator of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, who, although an autocrat, turned Singapore into an economic powerhouse. Or is it someone who rules without any oversight, or suppresses freedoms, such as speech, press and religion? Cincinatus was a temporary Roman dictator who famously gave up his power after winning a war, for the first one, and other Roman dictators during this time were appointed by the senate and could be removed.  As you can see, there is not one specific definition that fits a dictator, as there is always at least one exception, but I will use the definition of one who acts with complete impunity, and has no oversight by anyone else to stop them.

So, is Orban a dictator under these standards? Well, he could be voted out of office, as was just shown, and you can’t use the argument that he willingly gave up power to appear to be democratic because he otherwise would not have run in the first place! For example, in 2022, won 52% of the vote, but if he were a dictator, he would rig the elections to say he got 99%! And speaking of which, would an actual dictator not do anything in their power to harass and humiliate any form of opposition, if not flat out arrest them? Meanwhile, he could also be restricted by the Hungarian Parliament, and on the international stage, the European Parliament. And, when Orban did lose the election, he conceded and left without doing anything about it. If Orban was a real dictator, he is a very incompetent one.

Now, you can disagree with your leaders and criticize them, and you absolutely should, because you live in a free country. However, there is a difference between being a terrible leader and being a dictator.

Why do people always use buzzwords for people they don’t like? Probably so they can justify their various actions, as “Well, the other side is worse”.

Here is another example. Trump is often called by liberals, the Mainstream media, and others as akin to Hitler, a Nazi, and a dictator. This is done so people can support the liberal agenda, because, “Would you rather have Hitler in charge?”, to which the answer is hopefully not. Actually, this could be used as a justification on why the liberals are making more insane and perverse things that they plan to do, such as supporting castration of kids and making them trans, murdering the unborn, importing illegal immigrants, letting fraudsters run “Quality Learing Centers” and making a congressional district look like a lobster! Speaking of which, I live in that district, and despite living there my whole life, most of it I haven’t actually been to. There are places there that are 3 hours away, and you will STILL be in the same district!

When people say this is insane, they say it is to combat Trump and the Far Right Republicans, because they are Nazi’s, despite that not being true for a billion reasons, such as the fact you can criticize him and LITERALLY NOTHING will happen to you!

However, knowingly or unknowingly, but probably knowingly, liberals calling Trump and other political opponents they despise “Hitler” has several severe effects. First, people will not take you seriously, as was shown after the 2024 election, where people were just sick of it, and will see that Trump wasn’t a Nazi. However, because people won’t believe that Trump is a Nazi, they won’t care at whoever is also called a Nazi, so when actual Nazi’s start trying to take power, nobody will care, because when the same people who called everyone else a Nazi call the actual Nazi’s nazi’s, everyone would have ignored them. Or, worse, people will start saying that they are Nazi’s, wearing it as a badge of honor.

There is a real example of this happening. During the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971, the Pakistani Army murdered the Bengal Population in the Bangladeshi genocide. The Pakistani’s were helped by the Razakars, a paramilitary organization of Bengal collaborators. After liberation by India, Razakar became synonymous with a traitor, like how the word Quislig is used in the west. However, during the July Revolution in 2024, when Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, called the protesters Razakars. The protesters then took this as a badge of honor, and the term Razakar was seen from being a traitor to being a rebel.

However, the liberals don’t care, because they want you to participate in the fight for “Democracy”. However, the biggest problem with calling your political enemies names like Hitler. Soon, people will start to believe it, and think that Trump really is an evil dictator who will conquer the world. They will remember how evil Hitler is, and they will do anything to prevent the same thing because “Well, these people are probably experts, and because the experts say Trump is Hitler, it must be true.” So, they will grab a gun, and will try to assassinate the President, or Charlie Kirk, or whoever, because they think they need to prevent fascism, when President Trump or Charlie Kirk, or most people are anything but that. Since President Trump entered politics, there have been 20 security incidents involving him, because someone is trying to kill him. Compared to say, Joe Biden who only had 3. And that is the worst part of this, because people will start to think it is true, and they will do anything to stop Hitler 2.0 taking power.
