Just over 34 years ago, Soviet General Secretary Mikhal Gorbachev resigned, and the Soviet Flag was lowered from the Kremlin for the last time, to be replaced with the Tricolor White, Blue, and Red of the Russian Flag. The Soviet Union, once one of the most powerful countries in the world, was dead. The Cold War was over, Communism was defeated. All over the world, and especially in the countries that suffered under Communism, people celebrated the downfall of the most evil ideology in human history.
However, despite the obvious failures of Communism, such as famines and starvation, political repression, and the creation of the worst regimes on the face of the earth, like the Soviet Union, Maoist China, North Korea, Khmer Rouge Cambodia, and numerous others, people still think that Communism works, and are willing to give it a shot again. According to Gallup, at least 39% of all adults surveyed view socialism positively. Yes, at least ⅖ of all Americans think we should give a system which can’t possibly work a chance! A few months ago, New Yorkers elected a Communist to be their mayor for the next 5 years. And a few weeks ago, I had an argument with some idiot on the way to science class, because he thought Communism works.
Why is that? Why on earth is the one ideology that is coming back the worst one in the whole world. At least the people who think Nazisim works are in the fringes and are never often taken seriously. But why Communism? Well, I don’t know, I think it is just that some people are really really stupid. However, I want to prove these people wrong, because communism will never never work. And, besides, I can use it in case I run into that idiot from math class again.
Alright, so there are around a trillion reasons why Communism doesn’t work, even in theory, but to not take to long, I will just do 5. Now, this isn’t mentioning that Communism led to the deaths of over 150 million people, always causes famine and catastrophe, always leads to the rise of dictatorships, and generally never works. However, I will go full on into the ideas of what made communism, and communist theory, and how they went wrong.
Let’s say in an imaginary perfect utopian socialist society, we have 2 people working on the collective farm: Joe Hardworker and Jim Lazy.(Yes, I have a creative mind unlike anything the world has ever seen). Now, keep in mind that this is in an imaginary perfect socialist state, where there is no dictatorship, and nothing bad has ever happened…yet. Now, Joe Hardworker is a hard worker(NO WAY!), and he believes that, if I work hard, I can get reward, and succeed. So, all year, he works hard on the collective farm, and delivers his crops to the capital. Meanwhile, Jim Lazy is a lazy bum, who thinks that, because he is in a socialist state, he will get the same thing as everyone else, so he might as well not do anything, because he can get the same reward. So, all year, Jim lazy does nothing. Finally, at the end of the year, the state provides the reward, which is…very little, because the same has to be distributed to everyone, but Joe Hardworker thinks, well, it’s better than nothing. Then he sees Jim Lazy, who did nothing all year, get the exact same reward! At this point, Joe Hardworker is a little more than mad. After all, why should Joe Lazy get the same as Joe, if he did nothing all year!? And thus, we run into our first 2 problems with socialism and communism. First, because, due to everyone being equal and everyone having the same stuff, lots of people will choose not to do anything, as it isn’t going to affect the reward. This is why I think Universal Basic Income, where the government just gives people money, is a stupid idea, because people will just not decide to work anymore. The reason most people do things is because they believe that doing said thing will get them something out of it…or because somebody told you to do it. So, people will increasingly realize that they don’t really need to work, because they will get the same reward nonetheless. If a teacher told you that no matter what, you will always get an A, would you actually pay attention? Probably not, unless you actually care about the subject or your parents told you to pay attention. And that leads into our second problem, which is that although one might think that people will accept forced equality, people aren’t like that in the real world. Usually, unless you are a coward, you will want to, because you worked harder, get a bigger reward, and thus, people work hard to get said reward. So, if you work hard all year, you would obviously want a bigger reward than the guy who did nothing, because you did the work, you should get the benefits. However, socialism and communism conveniently ignore that.
And that leads to my 3rd reason, which is that no matter how much one will try to make equality, there is always going to be someone who wants more. Seeking equality is a noble cause, but it leaves out the critical fact about human nature, which is that someone is always going to want more. More power, more money, more whatever. And, because of this, someone will do anything to get it, and that will inevitably lead to immediate dictatorship. It is a flawed, but undeniable part of human nature that people are not always going to accept equality no matter what.
Meanwhile, the state starts to run out of money because, due to owning all the businesses, there is no incentive to create and innovate to contribute to the national economy, which will lead to mass poverty, which means that the reward gets less and less, as I already talked about before. People often complain about billionaires, and the extreme levels of wealth they have, but one cannot deny that the reason they have such wealth is because they created something that is worthwhile, so that when they sold the product from the creation, they could make money. However, because of communism, and everyone getting the same terrible reward no matter what, there will be no incentive to create something new, because there will always be the same amount of reward for making it. The biggest problem of communism is that they expect the best to come out of people, but when it is actually applied, it shows the worst, because people are always going to want more, and only do things in pursuit of more. Usually, people do not create and invent solely because they are altruistic and want the betterment of humanity, but because they want to get something out of it.
Now, after all that happens, with people getting the same amount of money, which is very little, as someone who didn’t work at all, until it runs out, and a dictatorship runs to power, people are going to start to leave. They will see that it is better everywhere else, such as in East Berlin, who, before the Berlin Wall was made, most people looked around West Berlin, and saw that this was much better than what they were getting, so the packed their bags and left. Even when the Communist government bans people from leaving, and it is extremely risky to escape, such as in Cuba, where if someone wants to escape to the US, they have to cross 90 miles of shark infested waters, risking their lives by drowning, starving, dehydrating, the shipping lanes, and, again, sharks, to make it to Miami, but people from Cuba often risk it all to escape. I will repeat that, people would rather risk their lives traveling extremely dangerous waters rather than spend another night on that island, even with their healthcare that communists and socialists always praise. Even in North Korea, where everyone is indoctrinated into believing that North Korea is the greatest place in the entire universe thanks to their glorious, definitely not fat supreme leader, people still risk it all on escaping, despite knowing that they will probably be shot by border guards, and having no confirmation that South Korea is any better, as again, indoctrinated into believing that North Korea is the greatest place on earth. Despite whatever they are told, they internally know that there has to be something better than this. And that is why communist nations always do anything to prevent people from leaving, because they know that their country sucks, but if everyone in their country knew that, they would leave. They know that communism doesn’t work.
Now socialists often point out that all the times that socialism and communism have failed is because “Well, that isn’t real socialism”, and that if it was applied one more time, it might work. However, as was shown with these examples, which coming from the pure ideas of socialism, that was indeed real socialism, as it happened in every country that adopted socialism and communism. Usually, the remaining communist countries at this point have two options; start embracing capitalism, like was done in China and Vietnam, where the governments realized the horrors they created through pure communism, and started embracing capitalism, which, although the countries are far from perfect, they are certainly better, with China even becoming a superpower, than they were under hardcore communism. On the other hand, countries that stay in original communism, like North Korea, remain an absolute hellhole that is the quintessential definition of a dictatorship. And besides, if that wasn’t real socialism, but it was tried hundreds of times after reading socialist principles and failed every single time at doing socialism, that can only lead to 2 things. Either, one, a country can never do socialism, not even do it right, just do it in the first place, or second, much more likely, it was real socialism, and you are saying it to make yourself feel better.
Now I should use this on that buffoon from math class.
