Although India is a very diverse nation with several different ethnic groups, they are all united by sharing Hinduism as their religion. Also, these regions have been united for several centuries. The only difference however, is that Punjab would gain independence, and the Tamil region too.

On the other hand, Pakistan is a mostly Muslim nation, but they (except for the Baloch’s and Pashtuns), are a mostly ethnically homogeneous country, with the Punjabi ethnic group. As the Pashtuns in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had several insurgencies to gain independence, it would go to Afghanistan. In Kashmir, Pakistan would finally get their dream of controlling the region, as the population is mostly Muslim.

In Bengal(Bangladesh), although Muslim, they are part of the Bengali Ethnic group, unlike the Punjabi Pakistan. So they would gain independence, and also gain Rakhine State in Myanmar, as they are mostly Muslim, and had faced genocide by the Tadmandaw in 2017

Across the map in Afghanistan, the country would be partitioned between the Pashtun majority regions, and everyone else. Because of this, the northern half of the country would go to Central Asian Nations. However, because there is a large Pashtun population in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Afghanistan would gain that. Continuing in Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan would get huge portions out of the country, as they have sizable ethnic minorities there, especially in Tajikistan, as Tajiks are the second largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, and more tajiks in Afghanistan than in Tajikistan. The Hazaras in central Afghanistan would also get their own country.

Down south, the Tamil region due to having different ethnicities and had been rarely throughout it’s history had been controlled by the government in Delhi, it would be independent. Also, the Tamil’s in Sri Lanka would join them.

On the other end of the island of Ceylon, Sri Lanka would lose the Tamil region, but other than that, nothing would change.

Up north in Punjab, the region would gain independence, as the population is mostly Sikh, while the rest of India is Hindu, and belongs to the Punjabi ethnic group.

Myanmar would be wrecked in this decision, as several regions of the country would gain independence, or just leave. Before the Rohingya genocide in 2017, the population was mostly Muslim, so it would go to Muslim Bangladesh. Now, Arakan army is making an offensive in the region to gain independence. Further west, the Karen’s have been vying for independence for 80 years, which they will finally get. Up north, in the Shan region, which is more ethnically Thai, would gain independence. In Kanchin, they would also gain independence. In 2023, Chin State declared independence, so it would keep it’s independence. After this partition, Burma would be just a rump state surrounded by the larger powers of India and China.

The decisions I made here would inevitably change the course of history, and who knows, maybe saved millions of lives.

When India was gaining independence in 1947, it was partitioned into India and Pakistan.
