Burgers, Mcdonalds, Freedom and Democracy, George Washington yelling “WHAT THE @%#! IS A KILOMETER!!!!” at the top of his lungs, and most of all, guns. Guns are a quintessential part of American life, to the point that there are around 170 Million more guns then people! Meanwhile, there is also a constitutional Amendment dedicated to it being a right to own guns, something unique to America. However, this is not the case in most nations, where guns are feared, and in most nations(Cough, Europe, Cough, Cough), Americans are ridiculed for their love and overobsession with guns. While some countries like Switzerland and Finland also love their guns, it isn’t to this level, and for different reasons. So, why do Americans love guns so much?

In 1607, in order to gain a foothold on the North American continent to stop the Spanish from taking it all, the British set up a colony on Jamestown Island in Virginia. It initially was failing, due to mismanagement, constant searching for gold and a famine, and it seemed like the English colonial project would fail, but thanks to cash crop farming, the colony stayed, and was expanded, along with it’s formation in other points in New England, the Chesapeake, and along the Delaware River, forming the 13 Colonies. However, the British saw what the Spanish did when running their empire, and decided to do it differently.

The Spanish in America sought to export the Spanish way of life into their colonies, which included their citizens not owning guns. However, this would immediately run into a problem when the Spanish tried colonizing the lands in modern day Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and other parts of the United States. There, they ran into various nomadic tribes, which they had to fight. Due to not being allowed to have guns, and thus being unable to form private militias to defend themselves, civilians had to live only in places where there was a Spanish garrison, usually only in the cities, which led to the Spanish empire having to spend more and more money to defend the colonies. Meanwhile, the Native American Tribes constantly harassed Spanish settlers and troops in the North, which led to the empire being only able to consolidate around the cities, as is shown in this map.

The British, meanwhile, were not going to make the same mistake. They allowed and even encouraged the colonists and settlers to have guns. The British realized quickly that, if the people in their colonies were personally invested in defending their property, they could use it to better profit from the colonies as a whole. So, the British allowed their subjects to have guns. With this began the origins of American Gun Culture, which was centered around defending ones property initially. When the British took land from Natives, they handed them out to settlers. Now, this giving out of land is important, as this is what motivated most of the settlers to cross the Atlantic in the first place. In Europe, parts of the Feudal Structure remained, and if you were poor, there was little to no hope you could become rich and own land. On the other hand, if you lived in America, you could own land, and have the right to do whatever it took to defend it, and you could make a profit. This was similar logic on why people later came to Australia, despite it being a massive prison technically. People were given the land, and with their guns, they could defend it. The British also supported this because here, you could buy slaves, grow cash crops, and generate revenue for the crown, and they wouldn’t need a large army to defend it, as the setters would defend their property, and by extension the colony, it on their own, so they could focus more on expanding their navy. However, there was a cost to the British Plan…

The British did this policy of giving guns everywhere, which is why they have a gun culture in their former colonies, until now. On the other hand, it is different in America, as guns came tied to owning property, and the gun was used to defend you, your family, and your property. On the other hand, most other nations have different gun cultures, assuming they have any at all, that are based on national defense. Swiss and Finnish gun culture is for national defense, as they are neutral, and thus have no enemies but also no friends, which means anybody could be an enemy, and they have to be prepared for that. Polish gun culture is based on defending against their neighbors. Canadian gun culture is somewhat like the US, due to both being colonized by Britain, but is more focused on hunting, and their laws are more stringent than the US. French and Germans used to have a gun culture based on killing each other. However, the United States is the only one that is based more on that of self, rather than national defense.

After the French and Indian War, the British treasury was empty, so the government in London began taxing the colonies, which caused mass resentment, as they had no say on the taxes. The taxes increasingly escalated, to the fury of the settlers. Meanwhile, more people in America began to realize that the differences between mainland Britain and the Americas were too different to remain as one nation, and were growing resentful of being ruled by some overlord 3000 miles away. Independence increasingly became a viable option, and when the British attacked the Americans at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the American Revolution began. Here, Americans from all across the 13 Colonies fought and won for independence against the most powerful empire in the world. And here we find the second reason for why Americans love guns so much.

You see, during the American Revolution, Americans from all walks of life picked up their guns so they could participate in the war for independence and serve their country. These citizen fighters formed militias and fought and won against the most powerful empire in the world, mostly on their own. The second reason Americans love their guns is because they were used to defend their country from a tyrannical government, so we can defend our freedom. Freedom is something that is greatly valued in our society, as it is the ideal that binds our nation together, so the gun culture was in a way that, if the time came, Americans could band together to fight against a tyrannical government, here and overseas, even if it is our own.

In the 1780s, guns had officially become a central part of American Culture, a symbol of freedom and defense. They were also instrumental in the American war for freedom, as they allowed civilians to participate in militias and participate in the war for independence. However, people also remembered how the British attempted to take those guns away on the eve of the war. The people who were righting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights knew that they could never let this happen, in order to prevent an autocratic regime taking control in the United States. So, they added the Second Amendment, which codified the bearing of arms as a right that would be protected by the government. Only 2 other countries do this, Mexico and Guatemala. This was done not only because people just loved guns, and it was fun, but as a deterrent to make sure the government would not gain too much power, because if they became autocratic, the people could and would fight back to defend the republic.

After American independence, we started to expand across the continent as part of Manifest Destiny, where it was considered the destiny of the American people to cross the continent. With all this new land, but a lot of people still living in the East, the government realised that ordinary people from across the world could settle this land and develop it for a small price, like what the British did. With lots of people in Asia and Europe in poverty, they realized that if they stayed where they were, they would live in poverty for their whole lives. However, if they moved to America, they could get land to farm, guns to defend it with, and they could make a profit. So, millions of Americans and Europeans went to America to migrate west and pursue the American dream, with their guns.

A century later, as America became the most powerful country in the world. However, in the 1960’s and 1970’s, during the Cold War, with incidents such as the botched JFK investigation and Watergate, people began to start to lose faith in the government. Meanwhile, crime seriously started to increase, and the American population began to realise that we really can’t trust the government.

And, finally, we come to the 3rd origin of American gun culture: Self Defense. As people began to lack trust in the government while crime was increasing, they bought guns to defend themselves because they didn’t believe that the government was going to do it. This already existed before, back in the days in the frontier, but this exponentially increased in recent times, as people decided to take matters into their own hands.

Despite most nations’ gun cultures, assuming they exist, being about defending the nation from outside threats, and being focused on defending for a greater cause, American gun culture is more focused about defending one’s self, which is unique. However, that soon might change. Some people say that, because we didn’t restrict guns when a portion of the population rebelled to keep slavery, they won’t restrict guns now. However, that was a different time, one where guns were still quintessential to American life, and often used by pioneers in the frontier. However, now, although still a large part, it is not as large as it was before. Meanwhile, it really seems that they are really trying to take our guns, such as in Virginia, where the Democrats attempted to pass some of the most draconian gun restrictions in the country. And if they take our guns, then America will no longer be the republic we have had for 250 years, it will be a dictatorship, where the government can do anything they want. We can never let this happen.

If you are not from the United States, what are the first things you think of when you think of America?
