With its iconic skyline, with famous landmarks like the Empire State Building, the One World Trade Center, the Statue of Liberty, and many, many others, the city is easily recognizable. New York is a symbol of Freedom, Liberty, and the American Dream. Even I, certified New York hater, knows that! New York is the greatest city in the world, full stop, period.

At least, it was the greatest city in the world. However, now, New York City is full of rampant crime, a housing crisis, and is full of illegal immigrants seeking asylum. New York, the most powerful city in the world, has been in shambles for the past few decades, for a variety of reasons, such as the fact that the people in charge, usually Democrats have been letting this happen, letting immigrants in all in the name of “Diversity” and letting criminals run amok in the name of “Restorative Justice”, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Meanwhile, this year, it was Election Year in New York City, specifically for mayor. Now, before, most mayoral elections in NYC didn’t generate much headlines, as there is a 99.9% chance of the Democrat Candidate winning, as this was liberal New York City, what did they think was going to happen. However, this one was different.
Eric Adams, who has been the mayor of New York since 2021, was supposed to be the Democratic frontrunner, but was facing 2 challengers. First, there was Andrew Cuomo, who was the previous governor of New York(The State), and a new challenger, a young Ugandan/Indian Muslim Communist immigrant(Checks all the DEI Checkmarks)from the New York Assembly named Zorhan Mandami. Now, this Mandami character went with a Socialist Platform, focusing on affordability, and promising government run grocery stores, free buses, freeze rent increases, and create universal childcare, which are horrible and stupid ideas that I will get to later. Now, although you might think “Didn’t the Soviets try that earlier, which went horribly wrong?”, they did, but, the younger generation of New Yorker’s, despite Communism and Socialism going horribly wrong whenever tried, they still decided to give Socialism a chance again, and Mandami was backed further by many immigrants that were not born in the United States. In June, in a result that shocked the country, Mandami won the Democratic primary for the city. Adams and Cuomo would become independents, until Eric Adams dropped out in October.

Finally, after several months of campaigning, trying to humiliate the other, and Mandami crying about his aunt being the real victim of 9/11(Yes, he actually said that) , it was election day across the county, including in New York City. Now, there was a Republican Candidate, Curtis Silwa, but there was no way he was going to win, so President Trump endorsed Cuomo(That twist), because, although he was bad, he wasn’t that bad, and encouraged all Silwa voters to vote for Cuomo. However, it wasn’t enough, and as the votes were tallied, Mandami won the election by a lot, at 51%, compared to Cuomo’s 41% and Silwa’s 7%. Yes, that’s right, Mandami won by so much that even if every Silwa voter voted for Cuomo, Mandami would still win. The next morning, in his victory speech, Mandami quoted infamous American Socialist, Eugene V Debs, who praised the Russian Revolution and Communism, even after all its failures

So, how did this happen? Well, there are several reasons. First, the idea of affordability was too enticing for the many poor people in New York City, especially with free rent, and they were willing to give Socialism another try. This was also probably due to the college students in Columbia University, who spent most of last year protesting in support of Hamas, who would probably also believe similar ideas. However, most of all, Mandami’s success could be most attributed to new immigrants in the city. Let’s take a look at this graph:

It shows how long voters in the city have lived there, and who they voted for. About 14% of the city has been there for less than 10 years, but they are pegging full support for Mandami. The next category is immigrants who have been there for at least 10 years, who also show most of their support for Mandami. Finally, there are the people who were born and raised in the city. Only 34% of people from NYC are voting for Mandami, which should tell you something; that the people who were there the longest are not voting for a socialist immigrant, and the people there the longest might know better, but whatever. However, even without that demographic, the other groups are behind him, which is about 49% of the city. But that graph shows everything, as, although Socialism might have swayed voter’s decisions, most of his vote has been from immigrants, mostly from Sub Saharan Africa who have not been here for long, who might as well just arrived at JFK Airport, and, after they wrecked the city they are in, they could just move to another one.

This is the most worrying part, as the people with the least connection and the least familiarity with the city are the ones deciding its future. That doesn’t mean that all immigrants are bad, or should be sent back to where they came from, as my parents are immigrants also. However, when the immigrants have more of a say in a city than the native born population, that is a problem! And this is not just limited to New York City, as in Minneapolis, also known as “Little Mogudashu”, which is not a complement, the reason for the loss of Omar Fateh, a Somali Immigrant who proposed policy similar to Mandami, was because not because he is an idiot unfit to run the city, but because he was from a rival Somali clan! African clan feuds are not supposed to determine the mayor of a major American City! However, that is what is happening, because the people who have been living there the shortest are deciding the future, because, as I said before, “Diversity is our strength” or something.

So, what is Zorhan Mandami going to do now that he is in charge of the biggest city in America. Well, as I said before, he promised to make all government run grocery stores run by the government, to freeze rent prices, make the buses free, and to make free childcare, along with many other policies, but let’s just go with these for. Now, this might seem great at first, but, once you start to think about it, those are very stupid and dumb ideas that should never be implemented. Now, maybe in Mandamiland, you can make things affordable by just yelling at it to be affordable, and you can yell at the housing market to be affordable, and suddenly, they will be affordable. But, this isn’t Mandamiland, this is real life! And, every time these policies and ideas have been tried in the past, it has gone very horribly wrong. For one, if it was that easy to make things affordable, everyone on the planet would have implemented it already so it can all be affordable, so the fact that it isn’t should tell you something.

Let’s start with the freezing rent. The reason the landlords have to collect rent is because there are costs related to being a landlord, like maintenance and legal fees, leasing fees, property management, water, sewage, gas, electric, waste disposal and collection, repairs, plumbing and many more. So, if the cost for expenses goes up, but the cost for rent doesn’t, the rental properties that can’t be maintained, and the landlord will probably shut them down, leading to more homeless people, sadly, already exacerbating the homelessness crisis, while you don’t have the incentive to buy or build anything new, because you can’t make a profit from it. So, by freezing rent increases, you get fewer properties, and the ones that are left are maintained much worse.

Now, the free buses. Well first, with the busses free, the city will lose a lot of revenue it would have got from bus fees, which would cause the city to have to raise taxes to make up for the losses, making the bus still not free, because nothing is free as we all know…at least, I think we all know. But now, this would make the buses into de-facto homeless shelters, because the only thing that stopped them at this point was the fee. This would ruin the experience for all the commuters on the bus, as now they had to share it with people making and using heroin and other drugs, which would cause the working class to use other systems of transportation, like a taxi or something, making the buses useless.

Now the government-run grocery stores, which is probably the worst of his many bad policies. His plan is to make the grocery stores in the city a “public option for produce”, and re-direct funds from corporate super markets to the city owned stores. Now, this idea has been tried in the Soviet Union, to disastrous results, with empty shelves, and lines stretching the block. And even if we could play devil’s advocate and say “Well, this time will be different”, think about every other thing run by the government-it takes forever to get everything done-actually, it takes forever to get anything done! People don’t go to the DMV and think, “Wow, the people running this place do great, and it’s so efficient, they should be put in charge of the food also!”, because the people running the government are slow and incompetent.

Finally, there is the problem with free childcare. As I already said, nothing is free, so the taxes would be raised to pay for the childcare, but, with that, why should we pay for the care of your child? Why should taxpayers have to be forced to pay for the care of your child? Maybe, shocker, the person who is supposed to pay for your child’s care is you! Because, everyone else is not supposed to pay for your child, because you are the parent, that is your job! He or she is not our child, they are yours. And even getting that out of the way, putting the government in charge of childcare will drastically reduce the quality of the childcare, because the government can’t run this stuff. On top of that, because it’s “free”, parents will just drop off all the kids at daycare, which the staff will be unable to keep up with this demand surge, which will make the daycare center terrible.

And this is not mentioning the other problems with Mandami, like that he supports Hamas and other things.

But these policies, as bad as they are, aren’t the worst part. Recently, as I have already said, Socialism is the new trend among young liberal voters, as at least 42% of adults view Socialism positively, despite it repeatedly failing. Meanwhile, after the disastrous 2024 election, the Democratic party has decided to begin pushing for Socialism, even more than they used to. However, until now, the only major socialist politicians were from insignificant and unimportant locations, like Vermont. However, now, a socialist politician is in charge of the most powerful city in the world. And with that, there is a whole new fear, because, now that the people have elected a communist for the biggest city in America, what’s next? Governor? President!? This is why we can’t have a Recession for the next 4 years, not because we won’t recover, but because then the election of a communist to the White House will be all but guaranteed. And, as I already discussed before, that would be horrible for the country, and would be a catastrophe. Just look at North Korea, the USSR, Maoist China, and Kemer Rouge Cambodia for examples of what happens when Socialism is law! Even democracies that tried Socialism, like Great Britain, Israel, Sweden and the Nordics, and India, and many other countries, the country would end up being broke until new parties and leaders like Margret Thacher, Benjamin Netenyau, the Bharatiya Janata Party changed it and made them into rich capitalist countries. And most horrifyingly, what if they want to keep their power after trashing the country and crashing the economy? In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez was elected like this, and ruined the country. But after his term ended, it became impossible to un-elect him, and to this day, Venezuela is still under Communist tyranny. What is stopping a socialist here from doing the same? Will in only 50 years, will America be remembered as a socialist hell? Or worse, a failed state ruled by an autocratic dictator? This is the most worrying part of this, because what is stopping the socialist from taking the rest of the country and implementing their rule?

So, now, New York is cooked, as they are being ruled by muslim communist Zorhan Mandami, which is only going to ruin the city. Meanwhile, business owners are packing up their bags and preparing to leave to a place where their businesses won’t be taken away from them. Meanwhile, the city’s landlords are preparing for their property to be abandoned which will lead to more homeless people and exacerbate the housing crisis in the city. Bus drivers worry that the buses they have been driving for years will become drug-filled dumps. And the entire country worries that our next president will be a communist who is going to ruin the United States. New York, once the most powerful city in the world, will now be known as a hell hole to stay away from

However, there is one small silver lining. If Mandami does everything he says he’s going to do, which will undoubtedly lead to ruin, New York, and by extension the rest of the country, will finally learn their lesson about electing communists to power. With this, they will see that it is a stupid and horrible idea, and elect someone else in 2029 to fix what Mandami has destroyed, which will eventually, one day fix the city, and make New York City the greatest city in the world again.

This is an excerpt from Episode 16 of the Corner Podcast.
