We’re used to high tide based on new moons. I normally stayed because I have an upstairs, but this time it was clearly going to be different from Irene or the other storms. I put everything up as high as I could, the computers and more valuable stuff.” This is what some people had to do when Superstorm Sandy was racing towards New York, one of the deadliest faced by the city, and the 4th most costly hurricane in US history.

Origins:

Hurricane Sandy started off the northern coast of Nicaragua, in the Caribbean sea, on October 22 2012, as a tropical depression. Only 2 days later, the storm went north and strengthened from a tropical storm to a hurricane. Hurricane Sandy passed over archipelagos in the Caribbean, including Jamaica and Haiti. Haiti was hit with rain, creating many mudslides. On October 26, it wrecked huge parts of Santiago De Cuba, a historic city, while Sandy strengthened into a category 3 hurricane, the highest throughout the storm. After leaving Cuba, the wind speed was never as high as it was there. After leaving Cuba, it went over the Bahamas before going out into the Atlantic. After passing the Bahamas, it weakened into a Tropical storm, but strengthened back into a hurricane. The NOAA said that this reformed structure was abnormal, and caused by warm waters made by Climate Change.

Sandy travels along the east coast:

While the storm raged north, hundreds of miles off the coast, some of its effects were felt. In North and South Carolina, waves flooded several roads. Sandy moved over Delaware and New Jersey, wrecking havoc over its path. In the north, a high pressure storm came and stopped Sandy from moving away from the coast, merging into Sandy. The press and newspapers called Sandy “A Frankenstorm” for a period of time. A full moon also raised the tide, adding to the storm surge. Sandy was called a Superstorm, unofficially, because there was no other way to describe the Hurricane.

Superstorm Sandy Hits New York:

When Superstorm Sandy hit New York, it flooded lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, stopping the metro, and hit the power grid, blacking out the city. As it happened, it snowed in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. During the whole strom, over 8 million people lost power, and power outages were as far west as Michigan. After hitting the New York area, it started to weaken on October 30, drifting towards Pennsylvania, and on Halloween 2012, it dissipated a few miles west of Pittsburgh.

“This whole place was a lake. There was a large amount of debris that was thrown onto the streets. There were boats that were thrown onto Cross Bay Boulevard, and the big dock that ended up at my house. There was table and chairs with [a] flower arrangement on it. It was almost [like] people were sitting there and transported somewhere else.” This was how Don Reipe explained what happened after Hurricane Sandy hit the city. 19 people were dead in New York City. 143 were dead at the end of the whole hurricane.

The Aftermath of Superstorm Sandy:

A few years later, experts discussed why this storm was so catastrophic and strange. First, only one model from Europe said that Sandy would go into the U.S, instead of going to sea and dissipating. Also, before the storm hit, the National Hurricane Center put local weather offices in charge of issuing reports. Furthermore, most people in the low lying New York area chose not to leave. Many parts of the east coast were damaged, along with the ones on Jersey Shore and New York Bay. Even in late 2017, 5 years later, people are still rebuilding houses, along with moving to higher places. Many people were left temporarily homeless and displaced. The storm was not as high as a category as other famous hurricanes(Katrina, Irma, Harvey, Maria…), because most of the region was unprepared for this and some other weather factors contributed to the damage. Sandy was the 4th most costly hurricane in US history, worth 75 billion(2012) USD. New York City had to pay 19 billion(2012) dollars alone.

A report said that New York needed to improve its infrastructure and rebuild the floodwalls.

In short, Hurricane Sandy was the wake up call the mid-atlantic needed.

Summary:

In short, you have learned about the formation of Hurricane Sandy, its path, its destruction and effect.

Sources:

Hurricane Sandy, explained, National Geographic

Sandy stories: Firsthand accounts of surviving the storm, AmNY

“We’re used to having occasional flooding.” said Don Reipe, a Broad Channel resident.
