However, history, despite this status, is just as important, if not more important then the mainstream subjects, for a variety of reasons.

First, history is important because, as the old saying goes, “Those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it.” This saying is true, as it means that, if people don’t learn about a historical tragedy will try it again because they don’t know any better. For example, for over 100 years, Communism and Socialism, have proven repeatedly, to only offer famines, death and misery, becoming the deadliest political ideology in the history of the world. Despite this, the younger generations are still trying to give socialism a chance, with political figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(AOC), Bernie Sanders, and Zohran Mamdani being elected to positions of power with policies proposed by the likes of Lenin, Stalin and Mao a century earlier, which bought the deaths of over a 100 million people.

There is also the fact that, when reading secondary sources(Text written by a historian after analyzing a primary source), the author of the source might include biases in the text, based on how they interpreted the text and what they believe in on a historical matter. This can be done by including some information, while also omitting certain details, that, in some peoples eyes are important, but in the eyes of others, not as much. Thus, we get biases. For example, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D Roosevelt passed the New Deal, which, to this day, continues to attract polarizing debate. On one hand, some argue that this was a brilliant move, because this helped people have jobs and contribute to economic growth, which is argued by lots of historians. However, some also argue that the Depression would have fixed itself, and that the New Deal was Socialist and illegal, also argues lots of other historians. Whoever is right is still to be determined, but the point is, what are you going to do about it? This bias, however, can help the reader examine both sides of the argument, and can make their own opinion about the historical matter, by making their own decisions, and thinking for themselves, rather then what someone tells them to think, which is required for a functioning democracy. Because, otherwise, you will not only be trapped in your own bubble forever, but, for not examining these biases, you can be indoctrinated and brainwashed into believing something false as part of someones agenda.

Speaking of indoctrination, if one doesn’t learn about history, someone can mold history in a way that fit’s their world view, and can indoctrinate you into an evil agenda based on false history. For example, Hitler and the Nazi’s, in order to gain popularity among the German public, decided to fabricate history, by claiming that some German politicians were Jewish, and they stabbed Germany in the back, which caused them to lose the Great War. Now, in reality, Germany lost World War 1 because the Americans joined, in large numbers, and initiated the Hundred Days Offensive, liberating large swaths of territory in France and Belgium, while meanwhile, the Salonika offensive in the Balkans forced the other Central Powers to give up. But the German’s didn’t care: They wanted vengeance. So, Hitler rose to power, causing the deadliest conflict in history, World War 2, and the largest genocide ever, the Holocaust, because people played with their emotions and lied about history.

But, even with all that, History is just fascinating in general. From the Age of Discovery to World War 2, and the Roman Empire to the Cold War, there is just all sorts of amazing stories.

In conclusion, like preventing repeated tragedies, learn about making your own decisions and opinions, and so you don’t get indoctrinated into an evil agenda. And that is why history is important.

History is a subject that doesn’t get enough credit, as, with other “more important” subjects like Math and English, history constantly gets overshadowed.
