The aircraft was the largest commercial aircraft in the world, with 4 massive engines, two full length decks, and can hold over 500 people. The aircraft astounded the crowd, and was met with phenomenal reception, as it was hailed as an engineering marvel, and a new beginning in the airplane industry.

However, it was not to be. Sales were not as high as expected, and after Emirates, the aircraft’s largest operator, decided to shrink it’s fleet in 2019, Airbus announced that the plane was no longer feasible, and would cease production in 2021, ending the story of the A380. Meanwhile, most operators plan to retire the aircraft by the 2030’s. So, what happened?

In order to understand what happened to the Airbus A380, we need to look back at the history of aviation to that point. In the beginning, the propeller planes used by airlines, like the Douglas DC-3 had shorter ranges, and, in order to travel long distances, several stops were required. However, the invention of the jetliner changed everything, as it operated more efficiently and could fly longer ranges, more popular routes were possible, such as New York to London, which Pan Am began using as a route using the Boeing 707 starting in 1958. This would be the final nail in the coffin for the Transatlantic ship industry, as the transatlantic ships are now only used for leisure.

However, this new surge in demand was causing airports to be congested with planes and passengers, and could not expand fast enough, especially as the surge of people traveling on planes was set to grow exponentially. So, Boeing developed the Boeing 747, the worlds first jumbo jet, and, at the time, the worlds largest passenger jet to solve these problems. However, they worried that it might not be successful, due to worries of it getting replaced by Supersonic planes like the Concorde, so they also added a nose that can fit cargo. However, when it was introduced in 1970, it was a huge success, as the worlds largest airliners began ordering it, and it was christened “The Queen of the Skies”.

The Boeing 747 also offered airliners longer trips due to it’s increased range, and set the standard for major airports.

The success of the Boeing 747 could be attributed to how it championed the Hub and Spoke system. Here’s how it works:

In order keep flights cheap, which would attract passengers, and not waste money, airlines will want to have their flights as full as possible. However, there are some routes with not that much demand to fly to on a direct flight. For example, when my family and I went to Bologna, Italy a few months ago, we couldn’t take a direct flight from Washington Dulles Airport because there is not enough demand for a plane to fly directly there. So, instead, the hub and spoke system makes planes from smaller airports fly to major hubs, like Dulles, where big planes fly to other major hubs, like Frankfurt, where the passengers can go to their respective destinations. So, planes like the Boeing 747 could be filled, and profitable for the airlines.

However, because of how profitable and successful the Boeing 747 is, Airbus, the European manufacturing giant, decided to compete and make their own jumbo jet to compete with Boeing’s superiority over wide body aircraft, especially after the introduction of the Boeing 777. In 2000, Airbus unveiled it’s plans to build the Airbus A3XX, which would be the framework for the A380, and the worlds first double deck passenger jet. It also found political support, as it symbolized a united Europe coming together to work on the project, with parts made all across the continent, with the engines in the UK, the fuselage in Germany, and the tails in Spain, all being assembled in France. In 2005, the plane was unveiled, and flew it’s first flight. However, it was supposed to start flight operations in 2005, but delays in production delayed it to 2007, when Singapore Airlines got it’s first A380

However, problems immediately started to rise. In 2008, with the Great Recession, aircraft orders decreased, far below Airbus’s expectations. Also, unlike with the Boeing 747, Airbus did not make a cargo version with the A380, which was highly successful with the Boeing 747. But, mostly, Airbus just didn’t get enough customers because there weren’t that many customers that had the same philosophy of the Airbus A380. This is because this can only be used on flights with low competition, because, otherwise, it won’t be full. For example, British Airways doesn’t use A380’s on the London-New York route, despite owning 12, because there is competition from airlines such as American and Virgin Atlantic.

It was not all bad for Airbus, because Emirates, which has 109 A380’s, has the same philosophy: Receive Emirates flights around the world straight to Dubai, and then send them back home. Because Emirates only flies to Dubai, and nobody else is, Emirates can use wide body aircraft like the Airbus A380, and still be full. Same with Singapore airlines, which is a small island nation that attracts lots of passengers

But it was undeniable: The A380 came at a bad time, as airlines were starting to move away from the hub and spoke system, and starting again to go on Point to Point routes, even on long haul distances. That doesn’t mean that hubs don’t exist, major hubs like New York JFK and London Heathrow still intake hoards of passengers, and are hubs for American and British airlines respectively. However, now, if the demand is large enough, airlines fly directly to the destination, rather than a large hub. For example, if I wanted to fly from Dulles to say, Lisbon, Portugal, rather than flying to a massive hub like Madrid or Paris, I could hop on a plane and fly directly there.

A major reason for this change is the introduction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2008. Although the Boeing 787 is not as large as the A380, or even the Boeing 777, it’s main benefit is it’s low operating costs. This is because the plane is made of Carbon Fiber materials, the engines are more fuel efficient, and the plane has much higher range. So, while the 787 is expensive to buy, it is extremely low cost to use, as not as much fuel is needed for shorter flights. With this, lots of airlines bought the 787, making it a success for Boeing, and the A380 couldn’t keep up.

On top of that, there are also other problems, such as the fact that the Airbus A380 was a logistical nightmare of biblical proportions. Because of it’s huge size, only a few airports can support it’s huge size, and the ones that did needed to make their runways and taxiways longer and wider, more space between gates, and two boarding bridges for both decks of the monstrous plane. For example, JFK airport in New York spent $175 MILLION to upgrade the airport just to accommodate the A380. Across the US and Canada, only 16 airports can accommodate the A380: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Chicago O’Hare, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Dulles, JFK, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, while the rest decided not to bother because the air industry had changed.

So, with this, in 2019, Airbus announced that they would cease A380 production in 2021, which they did. Most airlines now plan to retire their aircraft sometime in the 2030’s(Except for Emirates, which wants more STILL!). However, despite being an underwhelming result for Airbus, it still might not be a failure. The Concorde was set to replace the jets like the Boeing 747 and the McDonnel Douglas DC 10, but there have been no supersonic jetliners since 2003. Just because it failed in the markets cannot deny the fact that the A380 was a massive feat in engineering. However, when engineering, a profitable business plan also needs to exist to make a good product into a legend, like the Boeing 747.

In 2005, Airbus, the aircraft manufacturing giant, unveiled it’s newest aircraft, the Airbus A380, in front of a group of exited onlookers at Toulouse, France.
