Because Nando’s already had a reputation of making…interesting ads, South Africa shrugged it off, but it got viral when the rest of the world saw it on the internet. So, here it is:

In it, Zimbabwean dictator, Robert Mugabe is about to have a dinner party with fellow dictators, but then remembers they are all dead, and has flashbacks with his dictator friends, such playing with water guns with Gaddafi, singing karaoke with Mao Zedong, doing sand angles with Saddam Hussein, playing on swings with P. W. Botha, and riding a tank with Idi Amin.

After watching this, I first thought “Gee, uh, poor Mugabe I guess”, although I remembered less than a second later that Mugabe was a ruthless dictator, and had it coming. But then, I wondered, how historically accurate was this ad. Maybe not Nando’s dinner parties, but did Mugabe actually have a friendship with any of these dictators? So, I will explore each of the dictators one by one to see how accurate it is. With that, lets begin!

Muammar Gaddafi

Muammar Gaddafi was the dictator of Libya from 1969 to 2011, until the 2011 Libyan revolution. Mugabe and Gaddafi had a somewhat friendly relationship with each other while they were in power. This was probably due to their mutual distrust of western nations such as France, Britain, and most of all, the United States. They were also socialist states, so they were ideologically similar. However, this was probably an alliance of convenience, so they didn’t have a true friendship.

In 2011, during the Arab Spring, Lybian’s rebeled against Gadaffi, and overthrew him. In October 2011, after the Battle of Sirte, Gaddafi was caught, tortured, and killed. This event was probably what prompted Nandos to make the ad, because he was the last dictator before Mugabe.

Mao Zedong

Mao Zedong was the dictator of Communist China from 1949 to his death in 1976, which was a full 4 years before Mugabe rose to power, so case closed? Well, no. You see, in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Roneshia, which would later become Zimbabwe, was in a civil war. To make a long story short, the three main factions were the Rhodesian security forces, who wanted white rule in the country, and was backed by South Africa, ZAPU, which wanted black majority rule, and was backed by the USSR, and ZANU, Mugabe’s organization, which also wanted black majority rule and was backed by China. So, Mugabe and Mao did support each other. However, it is unlikely they met.

In 1976, Mao died, and got replaced by Deng Xiaoping. Deng’s reforms began to make China on the track to the current China today.

Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein was the dictator of Iraq from 1979 until 2003, when he got overthrown by the Americans. He also hated the west, like Mugabe, but they probably weren’t allied to each other, as Iraq was much further away from Zimbabwe then Libya. So, they probably didn’t know each other that well.

In 2003, America invaded Iraq, and, after an intense hunt, found Saddam and put him on trial. In 2006, he was found guilty and executed.

P. W. Botha

P. W. Botha was the dictator of Apartheid South Africa from 1978 to 1989, and the least likely, by far, to be in Mugabe’s dinner parties. Putting it lightly, the two dictators despised each other. During the Rhodesian Bush War, Botha’s regime supported militarily the White Minority government against ZANU and ZAPU. After Mugabe gained power, he supported the ANC in their guerrilla campaign against the Apartheid regime. Basically, Mugabe hated Botha for being white, and Botha hated Mugabe for being black. So, this would have been completely inaccurate.

In 1989, he resigned and got replaced by F. W. De Klerk, who began negotiating with the ANC to end Apartheid, which ended in 1991. Botha lived to 2006.

Idi Amin

Idi Amin was the dictator of Uganda from 1970 to 1979, when Tanzanian forces invaded the country after he invaded them first, and overthrew him. During the Rhodesian Bush War, Uganda wasn’t involved, and didn’t support either side. By the time Mugabe took power, Amin already had been overthrown.

After the Ugandan Tanzanian War, Amin fled to Saudi Arabia, where he lived until his death in 2003.

In November 2017, Mugabe got couped by Emmerson Mnangagwa, a fellow ZANU party member, so he could earn power after Mugabe’s death, rather than Mugabe’s wife. In 2019, Mugabe kicked the bucket and finally got to have his Nando’s dinner party with his fellow dictators in hell.

The end.

In November 2011, the South African food chain, Nando’s, aired it’s new ad, Last Dictator, in TV sets across the nation, in one of the most banger ads of all time.
