It has also been a crucial part of the economies and culture and history of a dozen nations in Africa.

The Nile river is an important part of Egypt’s history and economy, beginning back in antiquity, when “The ancient Egyptians developed a distinctive material culture shaped in large part by their local geography, natural resources, and relationship with the Nile River.”( Carnegie Museum of Natural History), as the nation relied on the river’s floods for agriculture, and still does to this day. Because of this, “Almost all of Egypt’s population of about 109 million lives either in Cairo, the capital and one of the world’s most populous cities; Alexandria; or along the Nile or the Suez Canal.”(ABC-CLO World Geography ) This is because these are the only the areas with water nearby, and thus the only actually livable regions in Egypt. However, Egypt’s dependence on the Nile River sometimes makes other nations think the Egyptians believe they own it, as stated by the Ethiopian newspaper Addis Fortune, “Why should other countries be prohibited in the use of their natural resources when Egypt has the luxury of wasting close to a quarter of the storage of the lake behind the GERD just in evaporation every year?”.(The GERD is a dam built by Ethiopia.)

Down south in Sudan, the Nile river splits in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, into the Blue and White Nile rivers. Like Egypt, the river is also used for farming, and is one of the only places to do it in the country because “Narrow belts of irrigated cropland, no more than a few miles wide, bisect the northern savanna and deserts along the main Nile River;” and is one of the few places to do it, as “Only 5 percent of the land in Sudan is arable”, (Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Physical Geography). On top of that, the Sudanese government has also built some dams on the Nile to “…control flood waters, irrigate agriculture lands, provide drinking water, and generate hydroelectric power”(Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Physical Geography).

In the world’s newest country, South Sudan, the “The White Nile flows through South Sudan and forms the country’s most prominent geographic feature: the Sudd, one of the world’s largest wetlands. “(ABC-CLO World Geography). However, unlike their fomer overlord, which had little arable territory, “The country has a high percentage of arable land—as much as 80%”(ABC-CLO World Geography), so the Nile is not used as much in South Sudan for agriculture.

In Ethiopia, the source of the Blue Nile begins in Lake Tana, in the Ethiopian highlands, and continues to lower ground to Khartoum. “The bulk of Ethiopia’s natural resources, including arable land, lie in the forests and plains of the country’s western highlands and along the lush valleys of its major rivers: the Blue Nile, the Omo, and the Baro.”(ABC-CLO World Geography), and thus the Nile is an important part of the Ethiopian agricultural sector, which “ 85% of the labor force ”(ABC-CLO World Geography) work in. Recently, in order to “To increase access to electricity, Ethiopia is in the process of building a massive dam over the Nile river, which will become the largest hydroelectric power station in Africa.”(ABC-CLO World Geography), which would be called the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. However, the Egyptian government worries that this will prevent the all important Nile floods. Several times, the Egyptian president, Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi has threatened to send F-16’s to destroy the dam. On the other hand, the Ethiopian government asserted that the floods would keep going as normal, and the dam would block not needed silts from flowing down the river.

At the southern end of the Nile River, in Uganda, it drains into Lake Victoria, and “the world’s third-largest lake”. It also splits off into other, smaller rivers, forming a large portion of the Nile River Basin. These rivers include “ the Albert Nile, Kagera, Katonga, Nkusi, Okok, and Victoria Nile.”(ABC-CLO World Geography). Because of the rivers, Uganda has very fertile soil that is used for agriculture.

All across Africa, the Nile river is important for various reasons, from water source, to agriculture, to fishing. However, it is also a source of contention, as the nations on the banks argue still on who can exert control over the river.

Sources:

“Egypt: Landforms & Climate.” World Geography: Understanding a Changing World, ABC-CLIO, 2024, worldgeography.abc-clio.com/Topics/Display/55?cid=48.
